IT Consulting for Sudbury & Northern Ontario Businesses

IT consulting from Nickel City Tech Solutions gives business owners in Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario a clear, written picture of their technology environment — the risks, the opportunities, and a phased plan they own. Vendor-neutral. No product pitch. Just useful documentation you can act on.

Serving Greater Sudbury, Northern Ontario, and surrounding communities. Remote support available throughout Ontario.

Most business owners do not need a full-time IT strategist. They need someone who can walk into the environment, look honestly at what is there, and produce a written plan. That plan is worth ten times its cost the first time it prevents a bad hire, kills a bloated proposal from another provider, or catches a backup gap before it becomes an incident.

This service is part of our IT Support Sudbury cornerstone. Consulting engagements often precede managed IT — you find out what you have before you decide who should run it — but plenty of clients use us for consulting only, keeping their existing provider or internal IT resource. That is fine; our value is the assessment and the plan, not the ongoing lock-in.

What a consulting engagement looks like

Every consulting engagement is scoped to the specific question you need answered. The most common starting point is a full environment assessment: infrastructure, security posture, Microsoft 365 tenant, backup and disaster recovery, licensing efficiency, and vendor stack. We spend a defined amount of time on site and remote, then deliver a written report and walk you through it.

The report is not a slide deck. It is a document you can hand to an internal IT person, another provider, a lawyer, or your board — with enough detail that they can act on it without needing us to explain every line.

  • Written environment assessment covering infrastructure, security, and licensing
  • Business-impact risk rating for every identified issue
  • Prioritized recommendations with rough cost estimates
  • 12-24 month phased technology roadmap
  • Vendor evaluation and second-opinion review of competing proposals
  • Cyber-insurance questionnaire and gap-closure guidance
  • M&A due diligence: technology assessment before an acquisition

When consulting is the right service

You are considering hiring an internal IT person and want to know what the job description should be. You are evaluating a managed IT proposal and want a second opinion. Your cyber-insurance renewal introduced questions you do not know how to answer honestly. You inherited a technology environment through acquisition and need to know what you actually own. Your current provider tells you everything is fine and you have a nagging feeling it is not. Any of those is a good reason to spend a few hours on a real assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What does an IT consultant actually do?

Give you a clear picture of your current technology environment, identify risks and opportunities, and produce a written plan for what to do about them. That covers infrastructure (servers, network, Wi-Fi, backup), Microsoft 365 tenant configuration, cybersecurity posture, disaster recovery capability, licensing efficiency, hardware refresh planning, and vendor coordination. A consulting engagement leaves you with documentation and a roadmap you own — not a sales pitch.

How is IT consulting different from managed IT services?

Managed IT is ongoing: you pay a monthly fee and we run your technology environment. Consulting is finite: a defined engagement, a written deliverable, and no ongoing commitment. Many businesses use consulting first — to understand what is actually going on — before deciding whether to hire internally, outsource to a managed IT provider, or run a hybrid. We will tell you honestly which path fits your situation.

Do you push products or take vendor kickbacks?

We do not accept kickbacks and we do not push specific vendors as a matter of principle. When we recommend Sophos, Meraki, Veeam, or Microsoft 365 licensing, it is because those products fit the situation — and we say so in writing. If a cheaper or better-fit option exists, we recommend that instead. Our value depends on that honesty; every client eventually notices the alternative.

What deliverables come out of a consulting engagement?

A written assessment report covering your current environment (infrastructure, security, licensing, backup, network), identified risks with a business-impact rating, prioritized recommendations with rough cost estimates, and a phased 12-24 month roadmap. You own all documentation. If you decide to hire an internal IT person or another provider, they can pick up from where our report leaves off — that is the point.

Do you help with cyber-insurance questionnaires and compliance?

Yes. Cyber-insurance renewals now include detailed questionnaires: MFA coverage, EDR deployment, backup posture, incident-response plans, security-awareness training. We help you answer honestly, identify gaps, and close them before submission. For regulated industries (legal, medical, financial), we scope the specific compliance work required — we do not claim generic 'compliance expertise' beyond what we can actually deliver.

Can you help us evaluate a proposal from another IT provider?

Yes. Second-opinion consulting is one of the most valuable engagements we do. You send us the proposal; we review it against your actual environment and business needs; we tell you what is reasonable, what is overpriced, what is missing, and what to ask before signing. This is billed hourly and typically pays for itself many times over on any material contract.

How much does IT consulting cost?

Assessment engagements are scoped and quoted as fixed-price projects based on the size of your environment. Ongoing advisory work is billed hourly with a defined scope. We will not quote a full engagement until we have talked through what you actually need — that scoping conversation is free and usually 30-45 minutes.
