Why business networks aren't consumer networks

A consumer router from Costco is engineered for a household: a handful of devices, streaming Netflix, a video call or two. A small office in Sudbury with 15 staff members running Microsoft Teams, cloud accounting software, VoIP phones, POS systems, security cameras, and guest devices generates ten times the load, on a fundamentally different traffic pattern.

Consumer gear responds by dropping calls, disconnecting Wi-Fi at random, and rebooting under load. Business-grade equipment handles concurrent load, roams cleanly between access points, isolates guest and IoT traffic on separate VLANs, and gets patched against real vulnerabilities.

The upgrade cost is real, but it's smaller than most people expect, and dramatically smaller than the cost of a network outage during a client meeting, a busy month-end, or a ransomware incident.

Wi-Fi that actually works for the whole office

Every 'the Wi-Fi is slow' complaint we investigate turns out to be one of a small set of problems: too few access points for the coverage area, access points in the wrong physical locations, channel interference from neighbouring networks, mixing consumer and business gear on the same SSID, or oversubscribed internet upstream. Sometimes it's all of the above.

We start with a site survey (physical walkthrough, RF analysis where needed, client-count baseline) and design a wireless deployment sized for your actual usage. We separate guest and corporate SSIDs, tune channels and power levels, and configure roaming so a laptop moves cleanly from one access point to the next without dropping the Teams call.

Segmentation, remote access, and security by default

Modern business networks are segmented: corporate traffic, guest Wi-Fi, IoT devices, cameras, VoIP, and (where applicable) clinical / point-of-sale systems each sit on their own VLAN with firewall rules between them. This is basic hygiene, and it's the difference between a compromised guest laptop being a minor annoyance and it being a company-wide incident.

Remote access is designed the same way: MFA-protected VPN, conditional access aligned with Microsoft 365, and where appropriate zero-trust patterns that eliminate always-on RDP and shared VPN credentials. Can you fix our Wi-Fi without replacing everything?

Often, yes. Most Wi-Fi complaints come from coverage gaps, channel interference, undersized or misplaced access points, or consumer-grade equipment being asked to do business-grade work. We start with a site survey and recommend the smallest change that solves the actual problem. Sometimes it's an extra access point in the right spot, and sometimes it's a full replacement. We tell you honestly which.

Do you support remote workers and VPN?

Yes. We design and support secure remote access using modern VPN, Microsoft 365 conditional access, and zero-trust-style controls so staff can work from home, from a client site, or on the road without weakening your network security. Shared VPN passwords and 'always-on' remote desktop exposed to the internet are exactly what attackers look for, so we replace them with something defensible.

What's VLAN segmentation and do we need it?

VLANs let you separate networks logically: guest Wi-Fi away from corporate, IoT devices (cameras, printers, thermostats) away from servers, point-of-sale away from office traffic, and clinical systems away from admin. It's a basic, high-impact security and reliability improvement most small business networks should have. Ransomware and IoT compromises spread laterally on flat networks; segmentation contains the blast radius.

Can you handle a full office network build-out, including a new location and cabling?

Yes. New offices and expansions get a full design: cabling specification, firewall, switching, wireless coverage plan, ISP coordination, VoIP-ready QoS, cameras, and printer/copier integration. We coordinate with your building contractor and cabling vendor so the network is ready when you move in, not two months after.

Do you monitor networks 24/7?

Yes. Firewalls, switches, and access points on managed IT plans are monitored continuously. Outages, degradation, and configuration changes trigger alerts to our team, and where possible we remediate before staff notice. Monthly reporting shows uptime, incidents, and trends.

How is business Wi-Fi different from what I have at home?

Business-grade Wi-Fi is designed for many concurrent devices (staff laptops, phones, tablets, guest devices, IoT, VoIP handsets, cameras), roaming between access points without dropping calls, separate SSIDs and VLANs for different user groups, and central management with real security. Consumer routers are engineered for a household of a few devices, so they collapse in an office of 20 people running Teams calls, cloud apps, and VoIP simultaneously.

Do you handle firewall management and cyber insurance requirements?

Yes. Business-grade firewalls with documented rules, current firmware, IPS/IDS, geo-blocking, and logging, plus MFA on any remote access, align directly with what cyber insurance underwriters now require. We document your firewall configuration and produce evidence you can hand to your insurer.

Can you run a wireless site survey before we commit to hardware?

Yes. For larger offices, warehouses, clinics, and multi-floor spaces, we run a wireless site survey, either a walkthrough with signal-strength tools or a predictive survey from floor plans, to size access-point count, placement, and channel plan before we quote hardware. Guessing at Wi-Fi is how you end up with expensive gear in the wrong spots.

Do you integrate networks with security cameras, access control, and VoIP?

Yes. Cameras (IP surveillance), access control (door readers, cloud-managed physical security), VoIP phones, and IoT devices all live on the business network and each need their own VLAN, QoS profile, and security posture. We design the network so those systems coexist without stepping on each other or opening security holes.

How do you handle multi-site networks across Northern Ontario?

Multi-site is designed for consistency: a common firewall vendor and configuration template across locations, site-to-site VPN or SD-WAN for shared infrastructure, centralized management (Meraki dashboard, Sophos Central, or similar), and consistent Wi-Fi SSIDs so staff move between offices without reconfiguring. Documentation and policy stay identical whether a site is in Sudbury, North Bay, Parry Sound, or the Sault.

What if our ISP is the actual problem?

It sometimes is. Weak Wi-Fi is often blamed for what's really an oversubscribed or unreliable internet circuit. We measure throughput, latency, jitter, and packet loss before pointing at any component. If your circuit needs a bump or a secondary connection for redundancy, we'll say so and coordinate the ISP order and cutover.
