What is Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM)?
RMM is the toolset and process a managed service provider uses to watch your computers, servers, and network devices continuously from a central platform. A lightweight agent is installed on each managed device and reports health, performance, patch status, disk condition, and security events back to us. When something drifts out of its normal range, we get an alert and act on it, usually before your staff notices anything is wrong.
How is RMM different from regular IT support?
Regular IT support waits for a phone call. RMM does not. Monitoring runs continuously, patching runs on a schedule, and maintenance runs during off-hours windows. Reactive support is still there when you need it. RMM simply reduces how often you need it and gives the technician full history on the device before the session even starts.
Does the RMM agent slow down our computers?
No. The agent is a small background service that uses minimal CPU and memory. Heavier tasks, such as patch installs, scripted maintenance, and disk cleanups, are scheduled for maintenance windows outside working hours wherever possible, so staff productivity is not affected.
Can you see everything on our screens?
No. Monitoring collects device telemetry: performance counters, patch levels, disk health, service status, event logs, and security alerts. It is not screen recording. A technician can start a remote control session for troubleshooting, and on managed devices those sessions are logged with the time, the technician, and the actions taken.
How does automated patch management work?
We define patch policies per device group: which updates apply, when they install, and how reboots are handled. Windows updates and common third-party applications (browsers, PDF readers, Java, collaboration apps) are approved, tested against a pilot group where appropriate, then rolled out on schedule. Failures are surfaced as alerts rather than silently ignored, and patch compliance appears in your monthly report.
What kinds of alerts do you actually act on?
Failing drives and SMART warnings, low disk space, servers or endpoints that stop checking in, backup job failures, antivirus or EDR disabled, unusual CPU or memory saturation, critical service stops, UPS and power events, and failed or missing patches. Each alert type has a defined action so nothing sits in a queue waiting for someone to notice it.
Can RMM deploy software across our whole team?
Yes. Standard applications, agent installs, printer drivers, configuration changes, and registry or policy tweaks can be pushed to a group of devices from a single console. This is how we keep a fleet consistent: everyone on the same versions and settings, without a technician touching each machine.
Do we get reporting?
Yes. Managed clients receive monthly reporting covering device inventory, patch compliance, alert volume and resolution, backup status, and any recurring hardware issues worth planning around. Quarterly reviews use those trends to inform replacement budgets and upcoming projects.
Do you monitor servers and network gear as well as workstations?
Yes. Windows Servers, Hyper-V hosts, virtual machines, firewalls, switches, access points, and NAS devices can all be brought under monitoring, depending on the model and what management interfaces the device exposes.
Is RMM sold on its own or as part of managed IT?
