Older projects that are unlikely to be actively worked but must be retained for professional or contractual reasons move to a long-term archive: typically the least expensive storage tier available, with retrieval times measured in hours rather than seconds, backed up independently from active systems.

Professional engineering bodies and many client contracts set expectations for how long project records, drawings, and calculations should be retained, and those expectations vary by project type and jurisdiction. An archive that hasn't been tested for retrieval isn't really an archive; it's an unverified bet that things will work when needed.
