A retail store's network usually has to serve several different purposes at once: point-of-sale terminals processing payments, security cameras recording continuously, back-office computers handling inventory, and increasingly, guest Wi-Fi for customers. Treating all of that as one flat network is one of the most common mistakes retail store owners make, and it creates both performance and security problems. Network segmentation: keeping POS separate from guest Wi-Fi
Running customer guest Wi-Fi on the same network as point-of-sale terminals is a security risk that is entirely avoidable. Segmentation, using separate VLANs (virtual local area networks), means a customer's device on the guest network has no path to reach the POS terminals or the back-office systems, even if that guest device is compromised or being used maliciously. Retail stores often have layout features that interfere with Wi-Fi coverage: metal shelving, concrete walls, stockrooms in the back of long narrow buildings.
