Why Does Outlook Keep Crashing?

Quick fixes to try first
Before touching the profile or reinstalling anything, work through the standard triage. These four steps resolve about half of the Outlook crashes we see, and they take less than ten minutes.
- Restart the computer fully, not just Outlook
- Launch Outlook in Safe Mode: hold Ctrl while opening Outlook
- Run Windows Update and Microsoft 365 updates to the latest version
- Sign out of the Microsoft 365 account in File > Office Account and sign back in
The real causes of persistent Outlook crashes
Corrupt or oversized OST file
Outlook stores a local cached copy of your mailbox in an OST file. When this file grows past 25 to 30 GB, or when Windows shuts down uncleanly, the file becomes corrupted and Outlook starts crashing on startup or when opening specific folders. The fix is to close Outlook, rename the OST, and let Outlook rebuild it from the Microsoft 365 mailbox.
Bad add-ins
Every add-in that hooks into Outlook, from Teams to CRM plug-ins to accounting integrations, can cause crashes when it becomes outdated or conflicts with an update. Disabling all add-ins and re-enabling them one at a time isolates the culprit quickly.
Damaged Outlook profile
The Windows profile that holds your account settings, signatures, and connection information can corrupt over time, especially after PC migrations or unclean sign-outs. Creating a fresh Outlook profile resolves crashes that survive every other fix.
Antivirus or endpoint security scanning Outlook
Some consumer antivirus products scan every message that opens, which causes intermittent crashes and freezes. Business-grade endpoint protection knows to leave Outlook alone at the file level and inspect email at the Microsoft 365 layer instead.
Group policy or registry drift
