How to Size a Hyper-V Host for a Small Business
Buying server hardware is not a decision most small businesses make often, which is exactly why it is easy to get wrong. Sizing a Hyper-V host means balancing today's workload against realistic growth, without paying for capacity that will sit idle for the next five years.
A well-sized Hyper-V host for a small business typically starts with enough physical cores and RAM to run all planned virtual machines at 60 to 70 percent utilization, tiered storage separating the operating system from data, redundant power and disks, and at least 20 to 30 percent headroom for growth over the expected hardware lifespan.
Start with the workloads, not a spec sheet
Before picking hardware, list every virtual machine the host needs to run: domain controller, file server, line-of-business application server, and anything else planned for the next three to five years. For each, note its current resource use if it already exists as a physical server, or the vendor's minimum and recommended specifications if it is new.
Sizing decisions made from a hardware brochure instead of actual workload requirements are one of the most common causes of both over-spending and under-sizing.
CPU cores
Hyper-V allows virtual machines to share physical cores, so you do not need to add up every virtual CPU assigned to every guest one-to-one against physical cores. A reasonable starting ratio for typical small business workloads (file services, directory services, line-of-business applications) is 2 to 4 virtual CPUs per physical core, lower for CPU-intensive workloads like database servers, higher for lightly used utility servers.
Buy enough physical cores that the host runs comfortably at 60 to 70 percent CPU utilization under normal peak load, leaving room for a spike or an additional virtual machine added later without a hardware refresh.
Memory
Memory is usually the resource that runs out first on an undersized host. Total the memory each virtual machine needs, including the host operating system's own overhead (generally 4 to 8 GB reserved for the Hyper-V host itself), then add growth headroom. Dynamic memory can help virtual machines share unused RAM, but it should not be relied on to compensate for a host that is simply short on total physical memory.

A single Hyper-V host is still a single point of failure for the applications running on it, virtualization does not eliminate that risk by itself. - Favour hardware platforms that allow adding RAM or drives later over hardware that is maxed out at purchase.
- Avoid buying enterprise-scale hardware sized for a much larger organization on the assumption of hypothetical future growth that is not actually planned.
- Revisit sizing whenever a major change is planned, such as adding a new line-of-business application or significantly increasing headcount.
