Why Large CAD and Revit Files Open Slowly
A well-specified workstation still stalls opening a 300 MB Revit model if the file lives across a slow VPN link or on a file share with the wrong architecture. Diagnosing slow CAD file performance means looking past the computer on the desk and at the path the file actually travels.
Large CAD and Revit files open slowly most often because of network latency between the workstation and the file's storage location, not workstation hardware. Fixing it usually means redesigning the file share, choosing remote desktop over VPN for remote access to large files, and implementing local caching for frequently used models.
It's rarely the workstation
When a firm's CAD or Revit files feel sluggish, the instinct is to blame the workstation and consider a hardware upgrade. In our experience supporting engineering and design firms, the workstation is the least likely culprit once it meets the specifications described in our CAD workstation specification guide. The far more common cause is where the file lives relative to where it's being opened.
How file-share design affects large files
Revit and other BIM files aren't simple documents; they're structured databases that get read and written to in pieces as you work. A traditional SMB file share works fine for smaller files, but large, actively-worked models benefit from file-share configurations designed for that access pattern: adequate server-side I/O performance, SMB protocol versions and settings tuned for large file transfers, and enough network bandwidth between the workstation and the server.
For firms using Revit worksharing across multiple users, a properly configured file share or a dedicated model-server approach matters even more, since every user is reading and writing to the same central file continuously.
VPN versus remote desktop for remote staff
When a designer works from home or a job site and connects over a traditional VPN, every file operation has to travel the full round trip across that VPN link, and large CAD files make that round trip painfully obvious. Latency, not bandwidth, is usually the dominant factor: even a fast home internet connection can have enough round-trip delay to make a Revit file feel like it's opening in slow motion over VPN.
Remote desktop or virtual desktop approaches (where the actual CAD or Revit session runs on infrastructure close to the file storage, and only screen images and input travel over the internet) sidestep this problem almost entirely, because the file itself never has to cross the slow link.

For firms that can't or don't want to run every remote session as a virtual desktop, local caching tools that intelligently sync commonly used project files to a local disk while managing conflicts can dramatically improve perceived performance. The trade-off is added complexity in making sure everyone is working from the current version, which is why document version control (discussed in our construction and manufacturing resources) matters just as much as raw speed.

Will a faster internet connection fix slow remote CAD access?
Usually not by itself. Latency, not raw bandwidth, is typically the limiting factor for VPN-based access to large CAD files, so a faster connection with the same round-trip delay often shows little improvement.
Is remote desktop access secure enough for engineering firms?
Yes, when configured with multi-factor authentication and proper access controls. It also keeps sensitive project files from ever being copied to a personal or remote device.
How do we know if it's our file server or our network causing the slowdown?
Comparing performance opening the same file locally on the server versus over the network isolates the variable quickly. A proper network and server assessment can pinpoint it definitively.
