Structured Cabling for a Small Office: What to Get Right

Cabling rarely gets attention until something goes wrong: a flaky access point, a switch that reboots randomly, a camera that keeps dropping offline. Most of these trace back to cabling decisions made years earlier without much thought.

The short answer

For most small offices, Cat6 is sufficient for current network speeds, while Cat6a offers more headroom for future upgrades and better resistance to interference over longer runs. Proper structured cabling with a patch panel and adequate PoE budgeting costs more upfront than ad-hoc cabling, but avoids expensive rework later.

Planning cable runs

Every run should be planned with a destination in mind: a specific desk, access point, camera, or printer location, not just "pulled toward that wall." Runs should avoid running parallel to electrical conduit where possible, since electrical interference degrades network signal over distance.

Patch panels: keep it organized

A patch panel terminates every cable run in one organized, labelled location, rather than cables running directly into a switch with no clear record of what goes where. This matters enormously when troubleshooting a problem or expanding the network later; unlabelled cabling turns a five-minute fix into an hour of tracing wires.

PoE budgeting

Power over Ethernet (PoE) lets devices like access points, cameras, and some phones receive power directly through the network cable instead of a separate power outlet. Every PoE switch has a total power budget it can supply, and adding devices without checking that budget can result in devices browning out or failing to power on, particularly as more access points or cameras are added over time.

Why cheap cabling costs more later

  • Low-quality cable and connectors degrade faster and cause intermittent faults that are hard to diagnose.
  • Unlabelled, undocumented cabling means every future change takes longer and costs more in labour.
  • Cabling rated for lower speeds needs to be pulled and replaced entirely when the network needs to grow, which costs far more than installing the right cable the first time.
  • Poorly planned runs near electrical interference cause performance issues that get blamed on Wi-Fi or switches when the real cause is the cable itself.
