Cybersecurity for Transportation Companies
Transportation and logistics companies handle exactly the kind of information attackers want, load details, banking and payment instructions, customer contacts, and driver personal data, spread across office systems and a mobile workforce. That combination makes carriers a realistic target, and the fast pace of dispatch work means fraud attempts sometimes get approved before anyone stops to double-check.
Cybersecurity for transportation companies needs to address freight-payment fraud and business email compromise, protect a mobile workforce of driver devices in addition to office systems, and maintain backups that can recover dispatch and billing data after a ransomware incident. The controls involved are defensive: authentication, monitoring, and recovery, not offensive countermeasures.
Why carriers are a realistic target
Freight brokers, carriers, and shippers exchange rate confirmations, load information, and payment details constantly, often under time pressure to keep loads moving. That combination of high transaction volume and urgency makes the industry a favourite target for business email compromise, where an attacker impersonates a broker, carrier, or factoring company to redirect a payment.
Attackers do not need to breach your systems directly to succeed. Often they compromise a partner's email account and use it to send a convincing, legitimate-looking request from a trusted contact, which is why authentication controls and staff awareness matter as much as technical defenses.
Freight-payment and business email compromise fraud
The most common pattern involves an attacker gaining access to, or spoofing, a broker or carrier email account and sending updated banking details for an upcoming payment. Once the payment goes to the fraudulent account, recovery is difficult and often unsuccessful.
- Verify any change to banking or payment details by phone, using a known number, not the one in the email
- Enforce multi-factor authentication on every email account, including dispatch and accounting staff
- Enable anti-phishing and impersonation protection in Microsoft 365 for executives and finance staff
- Train dispatch and accounting staff specifically on freight-fraud patterns, not just generic phishing
Protecting a workforce that includes drivers
Cybersecurity plans built only around office computers miss half the actual attack surface at a transportation company. Driver phones and tablets carry access to dispatch apps, email, and sometimes customer data, and need the same baseline protection as anything in the office. Our mobile device management service and article on MDM for drivers and field employees cover how to extend security to those devices practically.

Talk to Our TeamRansomware and dispatch downtime
A ransomware incident that locks up dispatch systems or billing servers can shut down operations entirely, since drivers and dispatchers depend on those systems being available continuously. The defensive fundamentals matter most here: endpoint protection on every device, patched systems, and network segmentation so an infection on one workstation doesn't spread to dispatch servers.
Backups that actually protect a carrier
Recovering from ransomware or a failed server without a proper backup means rebuilding dispatch history, load records, and billing data from scratch, if it can be rebuilt at all. Our backup and disaster recovery service, built on Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud, covers servers, dispatch workstations, and Microsoft 365 data with logged, periodically tested restores. Our companion article on backup for field service businesses applies the same principles that carry over well to transportation companies.
Network segmentation between office and dispatch systems
Where a carrier runs its own dispatch server or warehouse management system on-site, segmenting that system from general office network traffic limits how far a compromised workstation can reach. This falls under our broader cybersecurity and network and Wi-Fi services, and the network fundamentals are covered further in warehouse and dispatch office Wi-Fi.
Identity and remote access
Dispatchers, drivers, and office staff often need to access company systems remotely, and how that access is secured matters. Our article on remote access: VPN vs Zero Trust explains the tradeoffs for carriers deciding how to secure remote and mobile access to dispatch and back-office systems.
Frequently asked questions
What is freight-payment fraud and how common is it?
Freight-payment fraud involves an attacker impersonating a broker or carrier to redirect a payment to a fraudulent account, typically through a compromised or spoofed email. It has become one of the more common fraud patterns in the transportation industry because of the volume and urgency of payment communications.
How do we verify a banking-detail change is legitimate?
Always call the company using a phone number you already have on file, never one provided in the email requesting the change, and confirm the change verbally before processing any payment.
Do driver devices need the same security as office computers?
Yes. Driver phones and tablets often carry access to dispatch apps and company email, making them just as much a target as any office workstation, and they need mobile device management and security policy applied accordingly.
What happens to dispatch if we're hit with ransomware?
Without proper backup and segmentation, a ransomware incident can take dispatch and billing systems offline for days. Tested backups and network segmentation are what limit the damage and shorten recovery time.
