Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud: Backup, Security, and IT Operations in One Agent

A deep look at the platform Nickel City Tech Solutions standardizes on for data protection and endpoint security: backup and disaster recovery, EDR/XDR, email and collaboration security, data loss prevention, security awareness training, and patch management, all from one agent and one console.

Serving Greater Sudbury, Northern Ontario, and surrounding communities. Remote support available throughout Ontario.

Most small businesses end up running a pile of disconnected tools: one vendor for backup, another for antivirus, a third for email filtering, a spreadsheet for tracking patches, and maybe an annual PowerPoint for security training. Each tool works fine on its own, but nobody sees the whole picture, and gaps hide in the seams between products.

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud takes a different approach. It's a single platform that unifies data protection, cybersecurity, and IT operations under one lightweight agent per device. Backup status, threat detections, patch compliance, and DLP events all show up in the same console, correlated instead of scattered across five different vendor portals.

Nickel City Tech Solutions deploys Acronis as our primary platform for backup and endpoint security across Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario, for clinics, law firms, accounting practices, contractors, and any business that needs real protection without needing to become security experts themselves. This page is the technology deep-dive; our Backup & Disaster Recovery, EDR, MDR, SaaS Backup, Email & Collaboration Security, Data Loss Prevention, and Security Awareness Training pages cover each capability from the service side.

What's actually in the platform

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud is organized around three pillars that used to require separate vendors: Data Protection, Cybersecurity, and IT Operations. We license and configure the pieces that make sense for each client rather than turning everything on by default.

  • Backup and recovery for workstations, servers, and virtual machines, with local and cloud storage tiers
  • Disaster recovery, including the ability to run a failed server as a virtual machine in the cloud
  • SaaS backup for Microsoft 365 (Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams) and Google Workspace
  • Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and Extended Detection and Response (XDR) with behavioural threat detection
  • Email and collaboration security for phishing, business email compromise, and malicious attachments
  • Data loss prevention (DLP) policies covering USB devices, email, cloud apps, and messaging
  • Security awareness training with recurring modules and phishing simulations
  • Patch management for Windows, macOS, and common third-party applications
  • Remote monitoring and management (RMM) for day-to-day device maintenance

Why one agent instead of five vendors

The seams between disconnected security tools are where problems hide. A backup vendor doesn't know your antivirus flagged a device as compromised, so it keeps backing up encrypted files right alongside the good ones. An email filter doesn't share signal with your endpoint agent, so a malicious link that gets through email isn't cross-checked when it's clicked. Acronis's single-agent design closes those gaps because backup, security, and patching share the same telemetry.

It also means less agent bloat on every workstation and server, one vendor relationship to manage instead of four renewal dates and four support lines, and one console where we can see a device's full health picture: is it backed up, is it patched, has anything suspicious happened on it, and has the user completed their security training.

How we deploy, monitor, and test it

Deployment starts with an inventory of your devices, servers, and cloud tenants, followed by a protection plan tailored to what actually needs backing up, what security policies fit your workflow, and what patch schedule keeps systems current without disrupting your team's day. We roll out in phases, starting with a pilot group before deploying company-wide, so we catch any application conflicts early.

Once live, we monitor backup job status, security alerts, and patch compliance during business hours as part of your managed IT service. Any detection that Acronis MDR's SOC analysts flag as needing action gets triaged and acted on by our team, whether that's isolating a device, reviewing a DLP policy exception, or following up on a phishing simulation result with a specific employee.

We schedule regular restore tests for backup data, review DLP policy hits monthly to tune out false positives, and pull quarterly reports covering backup health, security incidents, patch compliance, and training completion so you have a clear record for your own records or for cyber insurance renewal.

Built for Northern Ontario business realities

Bandwidth in parts of Northern Ontario, including some rural sites around Espanola, Elliot Lake, and Manitoulin Island, isn't what you'd find in a major city. Acronis's block-level incremental backups mean only changed data moves over the wire after the first full backup, which makes cloud backup practical even on modest business internet connections.

For clinics, law firms, and accounting practices operating under PHIPA and PIPEDA expectations, having backup, DLP, and email security correlated in one console makes it far easier to produce the kind of evidence an insurer, auditor, or regulator asks for, rather than assembling reports from four different vendor portals under deadline pressure.

Frequently asked questions

What is Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud?

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud is an integrated platform that combines data protection (backup, disaster recovery, SaaS backup) with cybersecurity (EDR/XDR, email security, DLP) and IT operations (patch management, remote management) under a single agent and a single console. Instead of running separate tools for backup, antivirus, email filtering, and patching, one agent handles all of it, and one console shows the whole picture for a device or a whole client environment.

Is this the same as antivirus software?

No, it goes well beyond antivirus. Traditional antivirus looks for known malware signatures. Acronis includes an EDR/XDR engine that watches behaviour on the endpoint, correlates it with backup and network telemetry, and can flag or stop activity that looks like ransomware or an active intrusion even when the specific file has never been seen before. Backup, integrity checks, and rollback are built into the same agent, so a detection can trigger an automatic rollback of affected files in some scenarios.

Does Acronis replace our need for a firewall?

No. Acronis protects endpoints, mailboxes, and data. A firewall protects the network perimeter. We deploy Acronis alongside a properly configured business firewall (Sophos or Meraki), not instead of one. They cover different layers, and a serious security posture needs both.

Do you provide 24/7 monitoring with this platform?

24/7 security operations center monitoring, threat hunting, and incident response are delivered through Acronis Advanced Security + Endpoint Detection and Response (Acronis MDR), a managed detection and response service backed by Acronis's own SOC analysts, not by Nickel City staff sitting overnight watching a screen. Our team handles deployment, tuning, day-to-day monitoring during business hours, escalation, and acting on the recommendations that come out of Acronis MDR when something needs a decision made on your environment.

Can Acronis back up Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace?

Yes. Acronis includes dedicated cloud-to-cloud backup for Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams) and Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Shared Drives, Calendar, Contacts), stored independently of the source tenant so a compromised or accidentally-deleted mailbox can still be recovered.

What does the security awareness training piece actually cover?

Acronis includes short, recurring training modules and simulated phishing campaigns delivered to your staff, with reporting back to ownership on who completed training and who clicked what in a simulation. It's built to run on autopilot once configured: new hires get enrolled automatically, and repeat training keeps the material current without your team having to chase people down.

How does patch management work inside this platform?

The same agent that handles backup and security also inventories installed software and Windows/third-party patches, then applies updates on a schedule we define, with the ability to test on a pilot group before rolling out broadly. This closes a gap we see constantly: businesses running current antivirus but months behind on patches for Windows, browsers, or common applications like Adobe Reader and Java.

Will this slow down our computers?

A single agent handling backup, security, and patching is generally lighter on system resources than running four or five separate agents from different vendors, each duplicating file-scanning and background processes. We size backup schedules and scan windows around your team's working hours so routine jobs run outside peak use.

Can Acronis stop ransomware completely?

No security product can guarantee that, and we won't claim otherwise. What Acronis does is stack multiple defensive layers: behavioural detection that can catch ransomware activity before mass encryption completes, automatic file rollback for affected files where available, and immutable backup copies that ransomware cannot reach or alter, so recovery is possible even if an infection gets through. The goal is to reduce both the odds of a successful attack and the damage if one happens.

Do you migrate us from our current backup or antivirus vendor?

Yes. We run the new Acronis deployment in parallel with your existing tools until backups are verified and security policies are tuned, then decommission the old products. There's no gap in coverage during the switch, and we document the whole cutover for your records.
