Email is still the number one way attackers get into a business. Most incidents we get called about start with one email: a fake invoice, a spoofed request from 'the owner,' or a link that looked fine until someone clicked it. Basic spam filtering catches the obvious stuff, but targeted attacks are built to slip past it.

Nickel City Tech Solutions deploys layered email and collaboration security on top of your existing Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace mail flow, adding time-of-click link scanning, attachment sandboxing, business email compromise detection, and scanning that extends into Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.

For Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario businesses, especially clinics, law firms, accounting practices, and contractors handling wire transfers or sensitive client data, one convincing phishing email can cost far more than a year of proper email security.

Where basic filtering falls short

Standard Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace filtering is built to catch high-volume, obviously malicious spam. It's not tuned for the small, targeted attack aimed specifically at your business: a look-alike domain one letter off from a real vendor, a compromised supplier account sending a legitimate-looking invoice with new banking details, or a link that's clean when scanned but turns malicious after delivery.

Closing those gaps means inspecting sender reputation and behaviour patterns, checking links again at the moment someone actually clicks them, detonating attachments in an isolated sandbox before they reach an inbox, and watching for the specific language patterns of financial-request scams.

  • Time-of-click link re-scanning, not just scanning at delivery
  • Attachment sandboxing and detonation before release to the inbox
  • Business email compromise detection based on sender behaviour and domain look-alikes
  • Display-name spoofing and impersonation protection
  • Quarantine and one-click reporting workflow for staff
  • Retroactive removal of confirmed malicious messages already delivered

Beyond the inbox: Teams, SharePoint, and shared files

Attackers have adapted to better email filtering by shifting to collaboration tools. A malicious file shared through a Teams link or a SharePoint invite often bypasses email scanning entirely, because it never travels as an email attachment. We extend scanning coverage to files shared in Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive so the same protection applies wherever your team actually shares files.

This matters most for businesses collaborating heavily with outside parties, such as law firms exchanging documents with opposing counsel, or contractors sharing drawings and bids with subcontractors and clients.

Local relevance for Northern Ontario businesses

We regularly see business email compromise attempts targeting Northern Ontario contractors and property managers around invoice and deposit season, and phishing aimed at clinic and accounting staff impersonating well-known local suppliers or government agencies. Because we manage this locally, when a client calls about a suspicious email at 8am, we can pull the message, check delivery logs, and confirm whether anyone else received it, all within the same conversation.

For businesses running multiple offices across Sudbury, North Bay, or Manitoulin Island, mail-flow protection is centrally managed so every location gets the same protection and reporting, rather than each site fending for itself.

Attachment Sandboxing

Suspicious attachments are detonated in an isolated environment before reaching an inbox.

Teams & SharePoint Scanning

Protection extended to files shared through Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.

Reporting & Response

One-click staff reporting and retroactive removal of confirmed malicious messages.

Who it's for

  • Businesses handling wire transfers, deposits, or vendor invoices by email
  • Clinics, law firms, and accounting practices exchanging sensitive files daily
  • Organizations relying on default Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace filtering alone
  • Companies that have already had a close call with phishing or BEC
  • Teams collaborating heavily through Teams and SharePoint with outside parties
  • Cyber insurance applicants asked about email security controls

Common problems we solve

  • Convincing phishing and BEC emails slipping past default filtering
  • No visibility into what happens after a malicious link is delivered
  • Malicious files shared through Teams or SharePoint bypassing email scanning entirely
  • No fast way to pull a confirmed malicious message from every inbox it reached
  • Staff unsure how to report suspicious email, so nothing gets flagged

Frequently asked questions

Doesn't Microsoft 365 already filter spam and phishing?

Microsoft 365 includes baseline spam and malware filtering, and Exchange Online Protection catches a lot of obvious junk. It's not designed to catch every targeted phishing attempt, business email compromise, or a malicious link that's clean at the time of delivery but gets weaponized hours later. We layer additional inspection on top that specifically targets those gaps.

What is business email compromise (BEC) and why is it dangerous?

BEC is when an attacker either compromises a real mailbox or impersonates someone your staff trusts, usually an executive or a vendor, and asks for a wire transfer, gift cards, or a change to banking details. There's no malware or attachment to scan, so traditional filters miss it. BEC protection looks at sender behaviour, display-name spoofing, look-alike domains, and unusual financial-request language instead of just scanning for bad files.

Do you scan links and attachments after delivery, not just at the time of send?

Yes. Time-of-click protection re-checks links when a user actually clicks them, not just when the email first arrives, which matters because attackers often host a clean page at send time and swap in a phishing page hours or days later. Attachments are sandboxed and detonated in an isolated environment before being released to the inbox.

Does this cover Microsoft Teams and SharePoint, not just email?

Yes. Collaboration security extends scanning to files shared in Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive, since attackers increasingly plant malicious files inside shared links rather than email attachments once they know email is being watched closely.

What happens when a phishing email gets reported by an employee?

Reported messages get triaged and, if confirmed malicious, we can pull the same message from every other inbox it landed in across your organization, before more people click it. We also feed genuine misses back into filtering rules so the same attack doesn't get through twice.

Can you protect Google Workspace as well as Microsoft 365?

Yes. We deploy mail flow protection for both Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, since a growing number of Northern Ontario businesses run Workspace instead of, or alongside, Microsoft 365.

Is this the same thing as security awareness training?

They're complementary, not the same. Email security stops threats technically, before or at the point of delivery. Security awareness training teaches your staff to recognize what gets through anyway, since no filter catches everything. We recommend running both together.

How does this fit with the rest of our security stack?

Email and collaboration security runs as part of Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud, the same platform we use for backup, endpoint detection, and data loss prevention, so a detection on one layer (say, a malicious link clicked despite filtering) can inform response on another, like isolating the affected device.
